Kleine-Levin Syndrome

Recently, I was diagnosed with Kleine-Levin Syndrome. Affecting only 1 in 13,413,986 people, it’s an autoimmune disease where my body randomly attacks my hypothalamus. When it happens, I lose the ability to regulate my own body temperature and have run fevers as high as 105°F (40°C) and experienced mild hypothermia from temperatures as low as 93°F (33°C). I also cannot stay awake and end up sleeping for periods of several days to a over week. While it’s happening, I have trouble forming coherent thoughts, I get very confused and I become totally apathetic.

While I’m glad that I can finally put a name to what has been happening to me for the past few years, I can’t help but be bothered by the fact that there’s no standard of treatment for the disease and the instances where people go into remission varies.
